Someone asked me what I thought of the current teaching on Grace that some are calling the “Hyper Grace” teaching. Here is my reply:
I have only read about the Grace teaching in the news and a few other places. I have noticed that it seems to be spreading quite a bit, and that seems to be tracking with the overall direction of the church these days, which isn’t that good.
When Jesus told the woman caught in adultery to go and sin no more, He clearly wasn’t just talking about her spirit. He expected her to obey with her body and even her soul (heart). Jesus said the most important command is to love God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind. Where’s the separation between spirit and body in that? When Jesus told us how to pray, He said to pray that His Kingdom come and His will be done. If we are happy to ask for God’s kingdom to come down to heal our bodies and our souls, then why should we not expect His kingdom to rule and reign over our bodies and souls? Is His will only directed at our spirits? Of course not!
We have a choice every day whether we want to have His kingdom rule and reign in our hearts and lives, or whether we will instead live in the kingdom of this world. Put aside where our spirits will go after we die, the question is where do you want to live today? If you live in the world, you will live under its curse. If you choose to live in the kingdom of heaven, then His kingdom will be at hand and will manifest in our lives. But the kingdom of heaven is a kingdom with a King who rules over His kingdom and commands us to obey. And His will is that we go and sin no more. For what is sin, but the curse and a sign that we are not living in His kingdom.
In the end, I find a lot of this is culturally driven. People live far more in the world than they want to admit. And we simply follow the lead of the world and its cultural norms. We constrain our behavior only to the degree that our culture expects us to, not really because of what God commands. The kingdom of this world is all we truly know, it is what is real to us, and the Holy Spirit sadly isn’t much of an influence in our lives.
But God searches this world filled with its heartaches, pain, disease and suffering, and He looks for who will step into His kingdom, trust Him, and become like Him, full of love and healing. He paid the price so we can enter His kingdom, but you not only need faith to enter into His kingdom, you have to want to! You have to want His ways, His love, His healing and His rule.
What’s really cool is that His rule is a rule of love! And His love sees how much the curse of sin hurts us, and so He says STOP IT! Do you want to be set free? Then leave the curse of sin behind and enter His kingdom of love!
He paid the price once and for all that allows us to enter His kingdom freely, but we continually choose what kingdom we will live in at the moment. There is NOTHING stopping us from entering His kingdom – ever – except our own hearts and what we choose. His will is that we stop living in the kingdom of this world. His will is for us to choose ALL of Him and NONE of the world. His will is for us to choose His kingdom NOW, and not leave it for another time!
Are we of this world, or of His kingdom?
That’s the way I see it.
