I recently was quite struck by Genesis 1, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”
Right there it is – the very first thing God did was create two kingdoms – the kingdom of heaven and the kingdom of earth. You could say that He created one place for Him to dwell in His holiness and another place for everything else that can’t dwell with Him.
In fact, His first actions were to create light and “divide the light from the darkness”, and to create a firmament that divided the “waters from the waters”. That sure sounds like He is emphasizing the enormity of the division between heaven and earth. In other words, His holiness is a BIG DEAL.
Now, in the beginning, He came down to the garden to dwell with us, but we rejected Him. His love then led Him to pay the penalty for our sin so that once again, His kingdom could come down to Earth. He instructed us to pray for His kingdom to come and for His will to be done. And while we want a part of that, we tend to want a mixture of His power and our own desires. But how can you mix what He clearly divided so completely from the very beginning?
I think we need to start realizing that we can’t have His kingdom on our terms. If we want His kingdom, then we have to take it on His terms. He is love and holiness at the same time. Who can withstand His holiness except for the grace of His love?
Let us daily choose to enter His holiness and His kingdom through His incredible love.
